At Bearsted Primary Academy, pupils in Reception enter a safe, stimulating and nurturing environment where children feel cared for and encouraged to achieve their full potential – making every moment count.

Each class is attentive to the social, physical and cognitive development of our children. During their time in Reception, and throughout the school, we encourage all of our pupils independence and responsibility in their learning.

Learning is natural and fluid, often taught through carefully designed play-based activities. The activities which are planned throughout each day help support all areas of development, with frequent changes from task-to-task to challenge and to capture the imagination of our children. Through continuous monitoring, adaptation of our learning and of our environments, as well as reviewing what we teach our children, pupils are able to learn a variety of skills such as how to communicate their needs and learn self-management skills alongside their personal academic targets.

Using the IB PYP to deliver the new EYFS curriculum framework, our learning in Reception consists of four units of inquiry. These provide meaningful contexts which help to challenge our pupils and therefore enable them to make deep connections and explore big ideas about the world around them, preparing them for their future.
